Video or not to Video

Video or not to Video Brides in Munster Tipperary _ Kilkenny

I got a call yesterday from a local bride getting married next year and she was enquiring about my different  wedding video packages. I have 4, which you can see here. She went on to tell me some crazy quotes she received from videographers, both local and in other counties. She said she was thinking of not having a wedding video for her wedding and had considered getting her friend to film some of it. She told me she had a budget for videography and needed to stay within it. ‘Okay, fine’, I thought, but I do know, from over the last few years, that some people’s budgets for videography are not possible to work with. However, I thought: Okay, let’s listen to her and see what is possible. She told me she had a budget of €600 and was quite surprised when I told her I could work with her on this. We went on to discuss her day, what she might want covered for this and she booked me for my gold package! It’s a great wedding video package, I can start recording at her house and cover her day right up to and including the speeches. Even with this package, it’s absolutely packed with fantastic footage of her day. She booked me right away, so there’s one happy bride-to-be! So it got me thinking: Why video? Why can it be so costly? What’s  all the fuss about editing and so on?  Have a read below ..

Today, professional videographers have become as natural a part of the wedding as the photographer. Even better, if I say so myself. Not because I am a videographer here in Tipperary but because your wedding day goes by so quickly. Recording all of the activities on video will preserve the precious moments for you and your family to enjoy for years to come.

Okay, sometimes it can be costly, but look at you photographer for example. He starts at the same time as your wedding videographer, but he/she is in their car and heading home at about 5.30 pm, unless you have him paid to stay for the first dance. However, your wedding videographer will still be on hand to film your speeches, your guests’ messages, your dancing and so on. As well as this, nine times out of ten your videographer is cheaper than your photographer. I’m not whining here, but trying to get it across that we are equally professional. That’s why it so important not to cut back on the videographer. Your photographs will be fantastic, but your wedding video is priceless… worth a thought?

The typical full day wedding video package costs anywhere between € 800 and €1000, depending on the number of hours of coverage, the number of cameras and other factors. As always, remember what’s most important to you, determine what you can afford, and go from there is no need to go for a feature film unless you have the budget for this.Unlike photographs, a video camera records sounds, action and more of the overall atmosphere of the event, as you well know. Rather than focusing on just a few people like photographs, video can easily record all of all of your guests, so it’s nice to sit back and relive it all over again. In years to come you will really appreciate it, believe me!

Recording Your Wedding on a Tight Budget:
If you don’t have money in the budget for a professional videographer, you have other options. You could ask a close friend or family member with a video camera to record your wedding. Of course don’t expect the same quality and coverage that you would get from a professional videographer. As a wedding videographer, I have seen some dreadful “home wedding recordings” over the years. It’s a shame to return home from a fantastic honeymoon to sit down and cringe at the way uncle Paddy filmed your wedding …..  from the back seat in the church! This is an awful lot to ask friend to do. So, the best way to ensure that your most precious moments are recorded is to make a list. Pick out only a handful of moments that you definitely want on tape, such as the bride walking down the aisle, exchanging vows and rings during the ceremony, the best man’s toast, the bride and groom’s first dance, etc. But a professional videographer will not need to be told this as we know where and when we need to be at different times during the day.

Another nice idea for the wedding video is to record a short message from the bride and groom to each other. Arrange for the videographer to meet with the bride and groom separately sometime during the course of the day. Each can talk to the camera as if they were talking to their soon-to-be other half. These messages truly capture all of the love and emotion of the couple on their wedding day. They are so much fun to watch after the wedding and many years down the road!Special Touches for the Video:
A nice touch for your wedding video is to have your videographer invite your guests aside throughout the night to record a personal message to the bride and groom. This is something that I do at weddings if asked and it can be absolutely wonderful to watch. This is a lovely way to record all of your friends and family who attended your wedding and adds a personal touch to the video.
